AlexRenew received the George Burke Safety Award at this year’s WaterJAM, the Joint Annual Meeting of the Virginia Water Environment Association and the Virginia Section of the American Waterworks Association. The award is presented by the Water Environment Federation to a municipal or industrial wastewater facility that has established and maintained an active and effective safety program. According to the Water Environment Federation, the award was established in 1982 in honor of George W. Burke, Jr., for his many years of service to both the water environment field and WEF as staff manager of technical services.

WASHINGTON, D.C., Aug. 27, 2025 – The National Safety Council has announced its 16th class of Rising Stars of Safety, recognizing 41 safety professionals age 40 or younger committed to improving safety within their organization through impactful initiatives. The award is sponsored by Dow. AlexRenew's Safety and Security Manager Alex Rigby was named as one of the recipients of the award.

Earlier this year AlexRenew was awarded the Tunnel Achievement Award, presented by TBM: Tunnel Business Magazine in partnership with the Breakthroughs in Tunneling Short Course from the University of Denver, Colorado. The award celebrates projects that demonstrate innovation, teamwork, and positive community impact.

The Alexandria Chamber of Commerce recognized AlexRenew’s Technical Trainer, Heather Kerr, as the 2025 Utility Employee of the Year, as part of the Community Champions Honors program that spotlights individual excellence across 10 industries in Alexandria. Kerr is recognized for developing a new, structured training approach for wastewater operators that combines hands-on experience with technical instruction to prepare them for the challenges of the future.

On Sunday, April 27, the City of Alexandria’s Environmental Policy Commission (EPC) and AlexRenew, Alexandria’s wastewater authority, presented the 2025 Ellen Pickering Environmental Excellence Award to William “Bill” Hendrickson. A longtime Del Ray resident, Hendrickson has been a champion of open space, sustainability, and smart development in Alexandria for over 30 years.

AlexRenew and Alexandria Environmental Policy Commission have extended the nominations deadline for the 2025 Ellen Pickering Environmental Excellence Award, which recognizes members of the community who are committed to preserving natural resources.

Moxie’s Magical Tunnel Tour takes young readers on an adventure through AlexRenew’s Waterfront Tunnel, demonstrating how AlexRenew’s Tunnel Project will protect Alexandria’s waterways from pollution.

AlexRenew uses a Winter Quarter Average in our wastewater bill. The Winter Quarter Average is a cap that ensures customers are billed for indoor water use only — meaning water used at home that makes its way to AlexRenew’s wastewater treatment plant — during the Spring, Summer, and Fall months.

Alexandria, VA - AlexRenew has been named Small Issuer of the Year by national publication, The Bond Buyer, for its innovative use of green bonds. In June 2024, AlexRenew issued $50 million in green bonds to fund projects that will have a positive environmental impact, marking a first for a wastewater authority in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
